The most photographed bridge of Venice, the most romantic, the most mysterious. 

The covered bridge that leads from the Doge’s Palace to the Prisons has, in fact, somber fame. Some people think that it was named after the laments of those who were going to be executed. It sounds like a good reason but unfortunately there are no records about it.

Some others think that the name was given by the english poet Lord Byron in the 19th century, when he visited Venice.
Lord Byron quoted indeed the famous Bridge in his poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1812-18) but the name was already well known.

Giacomo Casanova, the famous lover who lived in the mid-18th century, in his memories mentions the bridge and its name; after being arrested and incarcerated he was lead from the prison by the guards to the Magistrates to the Doge’s Palace and had to cross ‘the bridge called of the sighs’ (in the original French version: le pont qu’on nomme des soupirs).

We enjoy thinking that the Bridge of Sighs was used for famous movie scenes, like the gondola ride of Katherine Hepburn and  Rossano Brazzi in “Summertime” or the kiss of James Bond Sean Connery with his blonde bond girl in “From Russia with love”. 

No matter why that bridge is associates with “sighs”, it is an icon of the city.

Die überdachte Brücke, die vom Dogenpalast zu den Gefängnissen führt, ist in der Tat düster berühmt. Einige Leute denken, dass es nach den Klagen derer benannt wurde, die hingerichtet werden sollten. Es klingt nach einem guten Grund, aber leider gibt es keine Aufzeichnungen darüber. 
Einige andere glauben, dass der Name vom englischen Dichter Lord Byron im 19. Jahrhundert gegeben wurde, als er Venedig besuchte.
Lord Byron zitierte zwar die berühmte Brücke in seinem Gedicht Childe Harolds Pilgerfahrt (1812-18), aber der Name war bereits bekannt.
Giacomo Casanova, der berühmte Liebhaber, der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts lebte, erwähnt in seinen Erinnerungen die Brücke und ihren Namen; Nachdem er verhaftet und eingesperrt worden war, wurde er von den Wachen zu den Magistraten zum Dogenpalast aus dem Gefängnis geführt und musste die „Seufzerbrücke“ überqueren (in der französischen Originalfassung: le pont qu’on nomme desoupirs).
Die Seufzerbrücke kommt auch in berühmten Filmszenen vor, wie z.B im Bond-Film “Liebesgrüße aus Moskau”  mit Sean Connery und  “Traum meines Lebens” mit Katherine Hepburn.
